§I

Overview

Wine writer David Peppercorn once called Château Coutet the "twin" of Château Climens, and the comparison holds: the two First Growths sit close together in Barsac, share a similar restrained, mineral style, and are routinely mentioned in the same breath as the appellation's best. Coutet has one clear edge over its twin, though: at 38.5 hectares, it's the largest vineyard in all of Barsac. Since 1994, the estate's winemaking has been advised by the technical team from Château Mouton Rothschild, a partnership that's helped push Coutet into the top tier of Sauternes-Barsac producers, right behind Yquem itself.

§II

Location

Coutet sits in the heart of Barsac, close to Château Climens and Château Doisy-Daëne, on gently sloping hillsides that rise to around 19 meters. The soil combines sand, red clay, and limestone subsoil with fine gravel and windblown sand, a mix the estate credits for the wine's signature cutting acidity. Like its Barsac neighbors, it depends on the mist off the Ciron and Garonne each morning and the dry afternoons that follow to bring on noble rot.

§III

History

The estate was originally built as a fortress in the late 13th century, and its crenellated square tower, a near match for the tower at Château d'Yquem, still stands at the center of the property. Wine production began in earnest in 1643 under Charles Le Guérin, known locally as the Lord of Coutet, making it one of the earliest documented Sauternes-Barsac producers. His nephew Jean le Pichard inherited the estate in 1695, and his descendants held it until 1788.

Gabriel-Barthélemy-Romain de Filhot bought the property just before the French Revolution; it was seized by the state in 1794 and de Filhot was executed. The estate later passed by inheritance to the Lur-Saluces family, the same family that owned Château d'Yquem, and stayed in their hands for roughly a century. Industrialist Henry-Louis Guy bought Coutet in 1922 or 1923 and introduced vertical presses to the cellar. In 1977, Marcel Baly and his sons Philippe and Dominique bought the estate and began an extensive renovation of the vineyard and winery; Aline Baly, representing a third generation of the family, joined full-time in 2005 and has led the estate through recent vintages. In 1994, the Baly family entered into an exclusive distribution and technical partnership with Baron Philippe de Rothschild S.A., putting Mouton Rothschild's winemaking expertise behind Coutet's wines.

§IV

Vineyards

At 38.5 hectares, Coutet is the largest single vineyard in the Barsac appellation. It's planted predominantly to Sémillon (about 75%), with Sauvignon Blanc (23%) and a small amount of Muscadelle (2%) rounding out the blend. The vineyard rises gently to around 19 meters, modest elevation but enough to matter on Barsac's flat terrain, over a mix of sand, red clay, and limestone.

Sustainability

Coutet's winemaking has moved toward organic practices in recent vintages, with releases including the 2020 explicitly labeled organic by retailers. The estate's approach fits a broader shift across Barsac's leading properties toward lower-intervention, more environmentally conscious viticulture.

§VI

Winemaking

Harvest is done by hand across multiple passes through the vineyard, selecting only berries with the right degree of botrytis on each pass. The estate's cellars run 110 meters underground, the longest in the Sauternes-Barsac appellation, where the wine ages in oak before bottling. The buildings now used as cellars once served as horse stables for neighboring Château d'Yquem, before being converted for winemaking.

Portfolio

Coutet makes a small range of wines from the same vineyard, spanning classic Barsac sweetness, an earlier-drinking second wine, and a dry white introduced more recently.

The grand vin and a First Growth of the 1855 classification. Vanilla, candied orange zest, apricot, honey, and gingerbread on the nose, with a fleshy, unctuous palate balanced by the sharp acidity the Coutet name itself alludes to.

Recognition

Premier Cru Classé (First Growth) of the 1855 classification, and one of only two First Growths in Barsac alongside Climens. Thomas Jefferson called it "the best Sauternes in Barsac" during his time as US minister to France, a line the estate still leans on today. Its 2020 vintage was ranked ahead of even Yquem in La Revue du Vin de France's Sauternes rankings, a rare result that speaks to how far the estate's reputation has climbed under Mouton Rothschild's guidance. Rare exceptional-vintage bottlings, made under the name Cuvée Madame, count among the most sought-after wines to come out of Barsac.

Visiting

Château Coutet offers guided tours and tastings by appointment, bookable through the official website. The estate's 110-meter cellar, the longest in the Sauternes-Barsac appellation and once used as stables for Château d'Yquem, is one of the more memorable cellars to visit in the region. Coutet sits close to Climens and Doisy-Daëne, making it easy to pair with other Barsac estates on the same trip.
