§I

Overview

Sandwiched between two of Barsac's First Growths, Coutet and Climens, Château Gravas has carved out its own identity less through classification (it has none) than through hospitality: this is a family estate that treats wine tourism as seriously as winemaking, complete with a permanent art gallery inside its barrel cellar. The Bernard family, descended from the Claverie family that first took over the property in 1850, still runs it today, making a Sauternes known for freshness and mineral drive rather than sheer richness, alongside a small range of dry Graves wines.

§II

Location

Gravas sits at the highest point of Barsac's clay-limestone plateau, directly between Château Coutet and Château Climens, two of the appellation's most prestigious neighbors. That elevated position gives it the same drainage advantage that defines the best sites in Barsac, and a front-row seat to the morning mist that rolls up from the Ciron and Garonne rivers each autumn, the trigger for the noble rot the whole appellation depends on.

History

Local lore traces the estate's reputation back to the 12th century and the era of Richard the Lionheart, though like many such claims in Bordeaux, it's more legend than documented fact. What's better established is that the Bernard family, through their Claverie ancestors, took ownership of Gravas in 1850, and six generations have run the property since. For much of that time the vineyard stayed small, just one hectare for decades, before expanding to roughly its current footprint by 1930. Today it's managed by Michel and Florence Bernard, who have leaned into wine tourism and the arts as much as winemaking, turning the estate into a genuine cultural stop in the region; it won a "Best Of Wine Tourism" gold award in the Art and Culture category in 2014.

Vineyards

The estate covers around 12 hectares in total, with roughly 8 hectares dedicated to Sauternes production and the remainder split between dry white and red Graves. Soils are a mineral-rich mix of clay and limestone, the same geology that runs beneath Coutet and Climens, and vines average around 35 to 60 years old depending on the parcel. The Sauternes blend leans heavily on Sémillon, with a small amount of Sauvignon Blanc for lift; a separate, lighter cuvée incorporates a touch of Muscadelle.

Sustainability

Gravas doesn't carry organic or biodynamic certification, but the estate has long relied on traditional, hands-on farming: manual harvest across successive passes through the vineyard, and a generally low-intervention approach to vineyard management consistent with a small, family-run property.

§VI

Winemaking

Harvest is done entirely by hand, with pickers making successive passes through the vineyard to collect only berries at the right stage of botrytis. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, and the wine is then aged in a mix of French and American oak barrels for around 18 months.

Alongside its Sauternes, the estate makes a small range of dry white and red Graves wines under the same roof.

The estate's Sauternes, built on freshness and minerality rather than weight. Sauteed apple, baking spice, and honeyed stone fruit, with the bright acidity the estate's limestone plateau is known for.

Recognition

Gravas carries no official classification, Barsac's Cru Classé designations belong only to a fixed list of estates from the 1855 ranking, but it's consistently well regarded by critics for a property of its size, and its position between Coutet and Climens gives it credibility by association as much as by review scores. Its wine tourism program has drawn its own recognition, including a 2014 "Best Of Wine Tourism" gold award, a rare case of an estate's hospitality earning as much attention as its wine.

Visiting

Château Gravas offers guided tours through the vineyard and cellars, including its barrel-cellar art gallery, finishing with a tasting of four to five wines. Advance booking is recommended, through the official website. The estate sits directly between Coutet and Climens, making it an easy and rewarding stop when visiting either of its more famous neighbors.
