Overview
There's no château at Château Pétrus, no formal classification propping it up, and for most of the 20th century, no real reason for anyone outside Pomerol to have heard of it. And yet Pétrus routinely outprices Bordeaux's First Growths, made from a single grape (Merlot, almost entirely alone) on a patch of blue clay so specific it doesn't exist anywhere else in the region. Pomerol itself has never adopted an official ranking system the way the Médoc or Saint-Émilion have; Pétrus is the reason nobody in Pomerol has ever felt they needed one.
